Title:An Invitation to Tropical Alexandrov Curvature
View PDFAbstract:We study Alexandrov curvature in the plane with respect to the tropical metric. Alexandrov curvature is determined by a comparison of triangles in an arbitrary metric space with their corresponding triangles in Euclidean space; in our setting, we study triangles whose edges are given by tropical line segments. We find that the behavior of Alexandrov curvature with respect to the tropical metric is complicated. We show that positive and negative Alexandrov curvature can exist concurrently in the plane, but it can also be undefined. Our results show a tight connection between the Alexandrov curvature and the combinatorial type of the triangle, and in some cases the curvature is in fact determined by the type.
This paper is dedicated to Bernd Sturmfels on the occasion of his 60th birthday.
