A search for the lepton-flavor violating decays $B^0_s\to\phi\mu^\pm\tau^\mp$ is presented, using a sample of proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, collected with the LHCb detector and corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of $9\,\text{fb}^{-1}$. The $\tau$ leptons are selected using decays with three charged pions. No significant excess is observed, and an upper limit on the branching fraction is determined to be ${\cal B}( B^0_s\to\phi\mu^\pm\tau^\mp) < 1.0\times 10^{-5}$ at 90% confidence level.

Using $(27.12\pm 0.14)\times10^{8}$ $\psi(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we present the first observation of the decays $\chi_{cJ}\to\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}\omega$, where $J=0, 1, 2$, with statistical significances of $11.7 \sigma, 11.2 \sigma$, and $11.8 \sigma$. The branching fractions of these decays are determined to be $\mathcal{B}(\chi_{c0}\to\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}\omega)=({2.37 \pm 0.22 \pm 0.23}) \times 10^{-4}$, $\mathcal{B}(\chi_{c1}\to\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}\omega)=({1.01 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.11}) \times 10^{-4}$, and $\mathcal{B}(\chi_{c2}\to\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}\omega)=({1.40 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.17}) \times 10^{-4}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. We observe no clear intermediate structures.

Title: Rare and Exotic Higgs decays at ATLAS and CMSPallabi Das (on behalf of the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations)Comments: Contribution to the 2024 QCD session of the 58th Rencontres de MoriondSubjects: High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex); High Energy Physics - Phenomenology (hep-ph)
After the Higgs boson discovery in 2012, the experiments at the LHC are continuing to study this particle and look for physics beyond the standard model. Some of the Higgs boson properties, such as the mass, has been measured with sub-percent level accuracy. Yet the present integrated luminosity is still a limiting factor for measuring the Higgs boson self-coupling or the first generation Yukawa couplings. The current constraints on the Higgs boson couplings would still allow for a sizeable branching fraction into undetected final states, which motivates the direct searches for rare and exotic decay modes. This presentation discusses several new results from these searches utilizing advanced online selection methods or analysis techniques with the entire Run 2 data.

Title: Dark sector searches with the CMS experimentComments: Submitted to Physics Reports. All figures and tables can be found at this http URL (CMS Public Pages)Subjects: High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex)
Astrophysical observations provide compelling evidence for gravitationally interacting dark matter in the universe that cannot be explained by the standard model of particle physics. The extraordinary amount of data from the CERN LHC presents a unique opportunity to shed light on the nature of dark matter at unprecedented collision energies. This Report comprehensively reviews the most recent searches with the CMS experiment for particles and interactions belonging to a dark sector and for dark-sector mediators. Models with invisible massive particles are probed by searches for signatures of missing transverse momentum recoiling against visible standard model particles. Searches for mediators are also conducted via fully visible final states. The results of these searches are compared with those obtained from direct-detection experiments. Searches for alternative scenarios predicting more complex dark sectors with multiple new particles and new forces are also presented. Many of these models include long-lived particles, which could manifest themselves with striking unconventional signatures with relatively small amounts of background. Searches for such particles are discussed and their impact on dark-sector scenarios is evaluated. Many results and interpretations have been newly obtained for this Report.

Title: Investigating strangeness enhancement with multiplicity in pp collisions using angular correlationsComments: 32 pages, 9 captioned figures, 2 tables, authors from page 26, submitted to JHEP, figures at this http URLSubjects: High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex); Nuclear Experiment (nucl-ex)
A study of strange hadron production associated with hard scattering processes and with the underlying event is conducted to investigate the origin of the enhanced production of strange hadrons in small collision systems characterised by large charged-particle multiplicities. For this purpose, the production of the single-strange meson ${\rm K^0_S}$ and the double-strange baryon $\Xi^{\pm}$ is measured, in each event, in the azimuthal direction of the highest-$p_{\rm T}$ particle (``trigger" particle), related to hard scattering processes, and in the direction transverse to it in azimuth, associated with the underlying event, in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV and $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV using the ALICE detector at the LHC. The per-trigger yields of ${\rm K^0_S}$ and $\Xi^{\pm}$ are dominated by the transverse-to-leading production (i.e., in the direction transverse to the trigger particle), whose contribution relative to the toward-leading production is observed to increase with the event charged-particle multiplicity. The transverse-to-leading and the toward-leading $\Xi^{\pm}$/${\rm K^0_S}$ yield ratios increase with the multiplicity of charged particles, suggesting that strangeness enhancement with multiplicity is associated with both hard scattering processes and the underlying event. The relative production of $\Xi^{\pm}$ with respect to ${\rm K^0_S}$ is higher in transverse-to-leading processes over the whole multiplicity interval covered by the measurement. The ${\rm K}^{0}_{\rm{S}}$ and $\Xi^{\pm}$ per-trigger yields and yield ratios are compared with predictions of three different phenomenological models, namely PYTHIA 8.2 with the Monash tune, PYTHIA 8.2 with ropes and EPOS LHC. The comparison shows that none of them can quantitatively describe either the transverse-to-leading or the toward-leading yields of ${\rm K}^{0}_{\rm{S}}$ and $\Xi^{\pm}$.

Title: Tau and low multiplicity decays at Belle and Belle IIPhilipp Horak (for the Belle II Collaboration)Subjects: High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex)
We present recent measurements of $\tau$ physics at the Belle II experiment at SuperKEKB. Measurements include a test of $e-\mu$ lepton flavor universality in $\tau$ decays, a search for the lepton flavor violating $\tau \rightarrow \mu \mu \mu$ decay and a precision measurement of the $\tau$ lepton invariant mass. In addition, we present a measurement of the low multiplicity decay cross section $\sigma(e^+ e^- \rightarrow \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^0)$, a key input in the theoretical prediction of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon.

We present a measurement of the ratio $R_\mu = \mathcal{B}(\tau^-\to \mu^-\bar\nu_\mu\nu_\tau) / \mathcal{B}(\tau^-\to e^-\bar\nu_e\nu_\tau)$ of branching fractions $\mathcal{B}$ of the $\tau$ lepton decaying to muons or electrons using data collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. The sample has an integrated luminosity of 362 fb$^{-1}$ at a centre-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV. Using an optimised event selection, a binned maximum likelihood fit is performed using the momentum spectra of the electron and muon candidates. The result, $R_\mu = 0.9675 \pm 0.0007 \pm 0.0036$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic, is the most precise to date. It provides a stringent test of the light-lepton universality, translating to a ratio of the couplings of the muon and electron to the $W$ boson in $\tau$ decays of $0.9974 \pm 0.0019$, in agreement with the standard model expectation of unity.

Title: Searches for violation of Lorentz invariance in $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ production using dilepton events in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeVComments: Submitted to Physics Letters B. All figures and tables can be found at this http URL (CMS Public Pages)Subjects: High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex)
A search for violation of Lorentz invariance in the production of top quark pairs ($\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$) is presented. The measured normalized differential $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ production cross section, as function of the sidereal time, is examined for potential modulations induced by Lorentz-invariance breaking operators in an effective field theory extension of the standard model (SM). The cross section is measured from collision events collected by the CMS detector at a center-of-mass-energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 77.8 fb$^{-1}$, and containing one electron and one muon. The results are found to be compatible with zero, in agreement with the SM, and are used to bound the Lorentz-violating couplings to be in ranges of 1 - 8 $\times$ 10$^{-3}$ at 68% confidence level. This is the first precision test of the isotropy in special relativity with top quarks at the LHC, restricting further the bounds on such couplings by up two orders of magnitude with respect to previous searches conducted at the Tevatron.

Title: Qualitative explanation of the data on the decays $D^0\to a_0(980)^\pm\pi^\mp$ and $D^+\to a_0(980)^{+(0)}\pi^{0(+)}$ in the four-quark model of the $a_0(980)$ resonanceComments: 3 pages, 5 figuresSubjects: High Energy Physics - Phenomenology (hep-ph); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex); Nuclear Experiment (nucl-ex); Nuclear Theory (nucl-th)

Title: How Viable Is a QCD Axion near 10 MeV?Comments: 9 pages, 3 figuresSubjects: High Energy Physics - Phenomenology (hep-ph); Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics (astro-ph.CO); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex); High Energy Physics - Theory (hep-th)
There has been an attempt to revive the visible QCD axion at the 10 MeV scale assuming that it exclusively couples to the first-generation quarks and the electron. This variant of the QCD axion is claimed to remain phenomenologically viable, partly due to a clever model construction that induces tree-level pion-phobia and exploits uncertainties inherent in the chiral perturbation theory. We confront this model with the cosmological domain wall problem, the quality issue and constraints arising from the electron electric dipole moment. It is also pointed out that the gluon loop-generated axion-top coupling can provide a very large contribution to rare $B$-meson decays, such that the present LHCb data for $B^0 \to K^{*0} e^+ e^-$ rule out the model for the axion mass larger than 30 MeV. There is a strong motivation for pushing the experimental analysis of $B \to K^{(*)} e^+ e^-$ to a lower $e^+ e^-$ invariant mass window, which will conclusively determine the fate of the model, as its contribution to this branching ratio significantly exceeds the Standard Model prediction.

Title: Equivariant neural networks for robust $\textit{CP}$ observablesSubjects: High Energy Physics - Phenomenology (hep-ph); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex)
We introduce the usage of equivariant neural networks in the search for violations of the charge-parity ($\textit{CP}$) symmetry in particle interactions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We design neural networks that take as inputs kinematic information of recorded events and that transform equivariantly under the a symmetry group related to the $\textit{CP}$ transformation. We show that this algorithm allows to define observables reflecting the properties of the $\textit{CP}$ symmetry, showcasing its performance in several reference processes in top quark and electroweak physics. Imposing equivariance as an inductive bias in the algorithm improves the numerical convergence properties with respect to other methods that do not rely on equivariance and allows to construct optimal observables that significantly improve the state-of-the-art methodology in the searches considered.

Title: Total cost of ownership and evaluation of Google cloud resources for the ATLAS experiment at the LHCComments: 48 pages in total, author list starting page 31, 7 figures, 1 table, submitted to Computing and Software for Big Science. All figures including auxiliary figures are available at this https URLSubjects: Distributed, Parallel, and Cluster Computing (cs.DC); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex)
The ATLAS Google Project was established as part of an ongoing evaluation of the use of commercial clouds by the ATLAS Collaboration, in anticipation of the potential future adoption of such resources by WLCG grid sites to fulfil or complement their computing pledges. Seamless integration of Google cloud resources into the worldwide ATLAS distributed computing infrastructure was achieved at large scale and for an extended period of time, and hence cloud resources are shown to be an effective mechanism to provide additional, flexible computing capacity to ATLAS. For the first time a total cost of ownership analysis has been performed, to identify the dominant cost drivers and explore effective mechanisms for cost control. Network usage significantly impacts the costs of certain ATLAS workflows, underscoring the importance of implementing such mechanisms. Resource bursting has been successfully demonstrated, whilst exposing the true cost of this type of activity. A follow-up to the project is underway to investigate methods for improving the integration of cloud resources in data-intensive distributed computing environments and reducing costs related to network connectivity, which represents the primary expense when extensively utilising cloud resources.

This paper describes my personal appreciation for some of the great research achievements of Mitya Diakonov, Vitya Petrov, and Maxim Polyakov and how my own research career has followed the paths they opened. Among the topics where they have been the most influential have been the pursuit and study of the exotic pentaquark. The search for exotics may require a complementary approach, such as experimental and theoretical activity. Here, I would like to focus on a story of $N(1680)$ in which I was involved.

Title: Bent Crystal Design and Characterization for High-Energy Physics ExperimentsMarco Romagnoni, Vincenzo Guidi, Laura Bandiera, Davide De Salvador, Andrea Mazzolari, Francesco Sgarbossa, Mattia Soldani, Alexei Sytov, Melissa TamisariJournal-ref: Crystals, 12(9), 1263 (2022)Subjects: Accelerator Physics (physics.acc-ph); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex)
Bent crystal are widely used as optics for X-rays, but via the phenomenon of planar channeling they may act as waveguide for relativistic charged particles beam as well, outperforming some of the traditional technologies currently employed. A physical description of the phenomenon and the resulting potential for applications in a particle accelerator is reported. The elastic properties of the anisotropic crystal lattice medium are discussed, introducing different types of curvature which can enable a wide array of bending schemes optimized for each different case features. The technological development of machining strategy and bending solutions useful for the fabrication of crystals suitable in high energy particle manipulations are described. As well as the high precision characterization processes developed in order to satisfy the strict requirements for installation in an accelerator. Finally, the characterization of channeling phenomenon in bent crystal is described, pointing out several experimental setups suitable to comply each specific case constrains.

Title: Benchmarking the Non-flow Contributions to the Elliptic Flow Parameter ($v_{_2}$) in Proton-Proton CollisionsComments: 11 pages, 5 figuresSubjects: High Energy Physics - Phenomenology (hep-ph); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex); Nuclear Experiment (nucl-ex)
This manuscript reports on the elliptic flow parameter, $v_{_2}$, in proton-proton (p-p) collisions using PYTHIA8 event generator simulations. The typical Event Plane (EP) method $v_{_2}$(EP) besides the algorithm used for the real data analysis has been adopted to measure the $v_{_2}$ of particles composed of different quark flavors. The $v_{_2}$ of the aforementioned particles was measured at the center of mass energy $\sqrt{S_{_{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV and $\sqrt{S_{_{NN}}}$ = 13 TeV. The pseudorapidity gap techniques, theoretically defined as $|\Delta\eta| = |\eta_{_{particle}} - \eta_{_{EP}}|$, between the particle of interest and the soft particles, $p_{_{t}}$ $\leq$ 2 GeV/c, used for the event plane determinations, have been implemented in the current measurements. The $v_{_2}^{\pi^{^\pm,}\pi^{^0}}$, $v_{_2}^{J/\psi,\Upsilon, K, D, B}$, and the $v_{_2}^{\gamma_{dir}}$ show similar pattern dependence on the transverse momentum for the same $|\Delta\eta|$, at both $\sqrt{S_{_{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV and $\sqrt{S_{_{NN}}}$ = 13 TeV. At each center-of-mass energy, the $v_{_2}^{\gamma_{dir}}$ $\le$ $v_{_2}^{J/\psi, \Upsilon, K, D, B}$ $\le$ $v_{_2}^{\pi^{^\pm,}\pi^{^0}}$ for similar $|\Delta\eta|$. The measured $v_{_2}$ shows slightly higher values at smaller $\sqrt{S_{_{NN}}}$ for particles of similar $|\Delta\eta|$, particularly at small $|\Delta\eta|$. The measured $v_{_2}$ for all particles shows systematic decreases with increasing the $|\Delta\eta|$ gaps as expected. Since PYTHIA8 does not include final state interactions, the reported $v_{_2}$(EP) is mainly due to the non-flow contributions which should be subtracted from the signal in the real data analysis that uses the same event plane determination algorithm.

Title: Flavino Dark Matter in a Non-Abelian Discrete Flavor ModelComments: 15 pages, 7 figuresSubjects: High Energy Physics - Phenomenology (hep-ph); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex)
We study a relic density of the flavino dark matter in modified Altarelli and Feruglio $A_4$ model which is respecting the $SU(2)_L\times A_4\times Z_3\times U(1)_R$ symmetry. We calculate the Lagrangian from the superpotential in the model. In estimating relic density, we consider the relevant interactions from the Lagrangian that realize the vacuum expectation value alignments and charged lepton masses where we assume that the supersymmetry breaking effects are small for flavon sector. As a result, we find the degenerate masses between the lightest ``flavon'' and ``flavino'', and only two parameters in the potential determines the relic density. Then allowed parameter space of these parameters are estimated from relic density calculation taking a constraint from lepton flavor violation into account. We also briefly discuss other dark matter physics such as direct detection, indirect detection and collider search.

Title: Hadronic molecules with four charm or beauty quarksComments: 8 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables, suggestions and comments are welcomeSubjects: High Energy Physics - Phenomenology (hep-ph); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex)
We apply the extended local hidden gauge formalism to study the meson-meson interactions with the quark constituents $cc\bar c\bar c$, $cc\bar c\bar b/\bar c\bar c cb$, $cc\bar b\bar b/\bar c\bar c bb$, $bb\bar c\bar b/\bar b\bar b cb$, and $bb\bar b\bar b$, where the exchanged mesons can only be the fully-heavy vector mesons $J/\psi$, $B_c^*$, and $\Upsilon$. We solve the coupled-channel Bethe-Salpeter equation to derive two poles in the $bb\bar c\bar b$ system and two poles in the $cc\bar c\bar b$ system (with four charge-conjugated poles in the $\bar b\bar b cb$ and $\bar c\bar c cb$ systems): one pole existing in the $bb\bar c\bar b$ system corresponds to the sub-threshold bound state when setting the cutoff momentum $\Lambda > 850$ MeV, while it causes the threshold effect with $\Lambda < 850$ MeV; the other pole existing in this system corresponds to the sub-threshold bound state with $\Lambda > 1100$ MeV; the two poles existing in the $cc\bar c\bar b$ system correspond to the sub-threshold bound states only when setting $\Lambda > 1550$ MeV and $\Lambda > 2650$ MeV, making them difficult to be identified as deeply-bound hadronic molecules. We propose to investigate the two poles of the $bb\bar c\bar b$ system in the $\mu^+\mu^-B_c^-$ channel at LHC.

Title: Investigating strangeness enhancement in jet and medium via $\phi$(1020) production in p$-$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeVComments: 25 pages, 5 captioned figures, 1 table, authors from page 19, submitted to PRC, figures at this http URLSubjects: Nuclear Experiment (nucl-ex); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex)
This work aims to differentiate strangeness produced from hard processes (jet-like) and softer processes (underlying event) by measuring the angular correlation between a high-momentum trigger hadron (h) acting as a jet-proxy and a produced strange hadron ($\phi(1020)$ meson). Measuring h$-\phi$ correlations at midrapidity in p$-$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV as a function of event multiplicity provides insight into the microscopic origin of strangeness enhancement in small collision systems. The jet-like and the underlying-event-like strangeness production are investigated as a function of event multiplicity. They are also compared between a lower and higher momentum region. The evolution of the per-trigger yields within the near-side (aligned with the trigger hadron) and away-side (in the opposite direction of the trigger hadron) jet is studied separately, allowing for the characterization of two distinct jet-like production regimes. Furthermore, the h$-\phi$ correlations within the underlying event give access to a production regime dominated by soft production processes, which can be compared directly to the in-jet production. Comparisons between h$-\phi$ and dihadron correlations show that the observed strangeness enhancement is largely driven by the underlying event, where the $\phi/\mathrm{h}$ ratio is significantly larger than within the jet regions. As multiplicity increases, the fraction of the total $\phi(1020)$ yield coming from jets decreases compared to the underlying event production, leading to high-multiplicity events being dominated by the increased strangeness production from the underlying event.

Title: Measurement of the impact-parameter dependent azimuthal anisotropy in coherent $\rho^0$ photoproduction in Pb$-$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeVComments: 21 pages, 3 captioned figures, 2 tables, authors from page 15, submitted to PLB, figures at this http URLSubjects: Nuclear Experiment (nucl-ex); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex)

The $\rho^0$ mesons are reconstructed through their decay into a pion pair. The measured anisotropy corresponds to the amplitude of the $\cos(2\phi)$ modulation, where $\phi$ is the angle between the two vectors formed by the sum and the difference of the transverse momenta of the pions, respectively. The measurement was performed by the ALICE Collaboration at the LHC using data from ultraperipheral Pb$-$Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}~=~5.02$ TeV per nucleon pair. Different impact-parameter regions are selected by classifying the events in nuclear-breakup classes. The amplitude of the $\cos(2\phi)$ modulation is found to increase by about one order of magnitude from large to small impact parameters. Theoretical calculations, which describe the measurement, explain the $\cos(2\phi)$ anisotropy as the result of a quantum interference effect at the femtometer scale that arises from the ambiguity as to which of the nuclei is the source of the photon in the interaction.

Title: Measurement of the production cross section of prompt $\Xi^0_{\rm c}$ baryons in p$-$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}~=~5.02$ TeVComments: 28 pages, 6 captioned figures, 1 table, authors from page 22, submitted to EPJC, figures at this http URLSubjects: Nuclear Experiment (nucl-ex); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex)
The transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) differential production cross section of the promptly-produced charm-strange baryon $\Xi_{\rm c}^{0}$ (and its charge conjugate $\overline{\Xi_{\rm c}^{0}}$) is measured at midrapidity via its hadronic decay into ${\rm \pi^{+}}\Xi^{-}$ in p$-$Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon$-$nucleon collision $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}~=~5.02$ TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The $\Xi_{\rm c}^{0}$ nuclear modification factor ($R_{\rm pPb}$), calculated from the cross sections in pp and p$-$Pb collisions, is presented and compared with the $R_{\rm pPb}$ of $\Lambda_{\rm c}^{+}$ baryons. The ratios between the $p_{\rm T}$-differential production cross section of $\Xi_{\rm c}^{0}$ baryons and those of $\mathrm {D^0}$ mesons and $\Lambda_{\rm c}^{+}$ baryons are also reported and compared with results at forward and backward rapidity from the LHCb Collaboration. The measurements of the production cross section of prompt $\Xi^0_{\rm c}$ baryons are compared with a model based on perturbative QCD calculations of charm-quark production cross sections, which includes only cold nuclear matter effects in p$-$Pb collisions, and underestimates the measurement by a factor of about 50. This discrepancy is reduced when the data is compared with a model in which hadronisation is implemented via quark coalescence. The $p_{\rm T}$-integrated cross section of prompt $\Xi^0_{\rm c}$-baryon production at midrapidity extrapolated down to $p_{\rm T}$ = 0 is also reported. These measurements offer insights and constraints for theoretical calculations of the hadronisation process. Additionally, they provide inputs for the calculation of the charm production cross section in p$-$Pb collisions at midrapidity.

Title: Charm fragmentation fractions and ${\rm c\overline{c}}$ cross section in p$-$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02$ TeVComments: 20 pages, 2 captioned figures, 2 tables, authors from page 14, submitted to EPJC, figures at this http URLSubjects: Nuclear Experiment (nucl-ex); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex)
The total charm-quark production cross section per unit of rapidity $\mathrm{d}\sigma({\rm c\overline{c}})/\mathrm{d}y$, and the fragmentation fractions of charm quarks to different charm-hadron species $f(\mathrm{c}\rightarrow {\rm h_{c}})$, are measured for the first time in p$-$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 5.02$ TeV at midrapidity ($-0.96<y<0.04$ in the centre-of-mass frame) using data collected by ALICE at the CERN LHC. The results are obtained based on all the available measurements of prompt production of ground-state charm-hadron species: $\mathrm{D}^{0}$, $\mathrm{D}^{+}$, $\mathrm{D}_\mathrm{s}^{+}$, and $\mathrm{J/\psi}$ mesons, and $\Lambda_\mathrm{c}^{+}$ and $\Xi_{\rm c}^{0}$ baryons. The resulting cross section is $\mathrm{d}\sigma({\rm c\overline{c}})/\mathrm{d}y =219.6 \pm 6.3\;(\mathrm{stat.}) {\;}_{-11.8}^{+10.5}\;(\mathrm{syst.}) {\;}_{-2.9}^{+7.6}\;(\mathrm{extr.})\pm 5.4\;(\mathrm{BR})\pm 4.6\;(\mathrm{lumi.}) \pm 19.5\;(\text{rapidity shape})+15.0\;(\Omega_{\rm c}^{0})$ mb, which is consistent with a binary scaling of pQCD calculations from pp collisions. The measured fragmentation fractions are compatible with those measured in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 5.02$ and $13$ TeV, showing an increase in the relative production rates of charm baryons with respect to charm mesons in pp and p$-$Pb collisions compared with $\mathrm{e^{+}e^{-}}$ and $\mathrm{e^{-}p}$ collisions. The $p_\mathrm{T}$-integrated nuclear modification factor of charm quarks, $R_\mathrm{pPb}({\rm c\overline{c}})= 0.91 \pm 0.04\;{\rm (stat.)}{}^{+0.08}_{-0.09}\;{\rm (syst.)}{}^{+0.04}_{-0.03}\;{\rm (extr.)}{}\pm 0.03\;{\rm (lumi.)}$, is found to be consistent with unity and with theoretical predictions including nuclear modifications of the parton distribution functions.

Title: Testing the CKM unitarity at high energy via the $W^+W^-$ production at the LHC and future collidersComments: 13 pages, 2 figuresSubjects: High Energy Physics - Phenomenology (hep-ph); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex)
We propose a novel test to assess the unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, $V_{\scriptscriptstyle{\rm CKM}}$, at present and future collider experiments. Our strategy makes use of the $W^+W^-$ production cross section to directly probe the $V_{\scriptscriptstyle{\rm CKM}}^{\dagger} V_{\scriptscriptstyle{\rm CKM}}$ product, which regulates the high-energy behavior of the observable. The violation of unitarity is signalled by an anomalous behavior of the cross section that grows quadratically with the $W^+W^-$ invariant mass with respect to the Standard Model prediction. By using the recent ATLAS measurements of the $W^+W^-$ cross section we are able to constrain the maximal unitarity violation allowed by current data, producing a bound complementary to the results of flavor physics experiments. Forecasts for the high luminosity phase of the LHC and for the future 100 TeV hadron collider are also discussed.

The Data Acquisition System (DAQ) for the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) dark matter detector is described. The signals from 745 PMTs, distributed across three subsystems, are sampled with 100-MHz 32-channel digitizers (DDC-32s). A basic waveform analysis is carried out on the on-board Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) to extract information about the observed scintillation and electroluminescence signals. This information is used to determine if the digitized waveforms should be preserved for offline analysis.
The system is designed around the Kintex-7 FPGA. In addition to digitizing the PMT signals and providing basic event selection in real time, the flexibility provided by the use of FPGAs allows us to monitor the performance of the detector and the DAQ in parallel to normal data acquisition.
The hardware and software/firmware of this FPGA-based Architecture for Data acquisition and Realtime monitoring (FADR) are discussed and performance measurements are described. - [24] arXiv:2405.14773 (cross-list from hep-ph) [pdf, ps, html, other]

Title: Fully charmed tetraquarks from LHC to FCC: Natural stability from fragmentationComments: 56 pages, 13 figuresSubjects: High Energy Physics - Phenomenology (hep-ph); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex); Nuclear Experiment (nucl-ex); Nuclear Theory (nucl-th)
We investigate the inclusive production of fully charmed tetraquarks, $T_{4c}(0^{++})$ or $T_{4c}(2^{++})$ radial excitations, in high-energy proton collisions. We build our study upon the collinear fragmentation of a single parton in a variable-flavor number scheme, suited to describe the tetraquark formation mechanism from moderate to large transverse-momentum regimes. To this extent, we derive a novel set of DGLAP-evolving collinear fragmentation functions, named TQ4Q1.0 determinations. They encode initial-scale inputs corresponding to both gluon and heavy-quark fragmentation channels, defined within the context of quark-potential and spin-physics inspired models, respectively. We work within the NLL/NLO$^+$ hybrid factorization and make use of the JETHAD numeric interface along with the symJETHAD symbolic calculation plugin. With these tools, we provide predictions for high-energy observables sensitive to $T_{4c}$ plus jet emissions at center-of-mass energies ranging from 14 TeV at the LHC to the 100 TeV nominal energy of the FCC.

Title: New limits on neutrino decay from high-energy astrophysical neutrinosComments: 20 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, plus appendicesSubjects: High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena (astro-ph.HE); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex); High Energy Physics - Phenomenology (hep-ph)
Since neutrinos have mass differences, they could decay into one another. But their lifetimes are likely long, even when shortened by new physics, so decay likely impacts neutrinos only during long trips. This makes high-energy astrophysical neutrinos, traveling for up to billions of light-years, sensitive probes of decay. However, their sensitivity must be tempered by reality. We derive from them thorough bounds on the neutrino lifetimes accounting for critical astrophysical unknowns and the nuances of neutrino detection. Using the diffuse neutrino flux, we disfavor lifetimes $\tau \lesssim 20$-450 s $(m/{\rm eV})$, based on present IceCube data, and forecast factor-of-10 improvements by upcoming detectors. Using, for the first time, neutrinos from the active galaxy NGC 1068, extant unknowns preclude placing lifetime bounds today, but upcoming detectors could disfavor $\tau \sim 100$-5000 s $(m/{\rm eV})$.

The stability of a dark matter detector on the timescale of a few years is a key requirement due to the large exposure needed to achieve a competitive sensitivity. It is especially crucial to enable the detector to potentially detect any annual event rate modulation, an expected dark matter signature. In this work, we present the performance history of the DarkSide-50 dual-phase argon time projection chamber over its almost three-year low-radioactivity argon run. In particular, we focus on the electroluminescence signal that enables sensitivity to sub-keV energy depositions. The stability of the electroluminescence yield is found to be better than 0.5%. Finally, we show the temporal evolution of the observed event rate around the sub-keV region being consistent to the background prediction.

Signal reconstruction through software processing is a crucial component of the background and signal models in the PandaX-4T experiment, which is a multi-tonne dark matter direct search experiment. The accuracy of signal reconstruction is influenced by various detector artifacts, including noise, dark count of photomultiplier, impurity photoionization in the detector, and other relevant considerations. In this study, we present a detailed description of a semi-data-driven approach designed to simulate the signal waveform. This work provides a reliable model for the efficiency and bias of the signal reconstruction in the data analysis of PandaX-4T. By comparing critical variables which relate to the temporal shape and hit pattern of the signals, we demonstrate a good agreement between the simulation and data.

The first search for nonresonant $B_c^+\to\pi^+\mu^+\mu^-$ decays is reported. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$. No evidence for an excess of signal events over background is observed and an upper limit is set on the branching fraction ratio ${\cal B}(B_c^+\to\pi^+\mu^+\mu^-)/{\cal B}(B_c^+\to J/\psi \pi^+) < 2.1\times 10^{-4}$ at $90\%$ confidence level. Additionally, an updated measurement of the ratio of the $B_c^+\to\psi(2S)\pi^+$ and $B_c^+\to J/\psi \pi^+$ branching fractions is reported. The ratio ${\cal B}(B_c^+\to\psi(2S)\pi^+)/{\cal B}(B_c^+\to J/\psi \pi^+)$ is measured to be $0.254\pm 0.018 \pm 0.003 \pm 0.005$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainties on the branching fractions of the leptonic $J/\psi$ and $\psi(2S)$ decays. This measurement is the most precise to date and is consistent with previous LHCb results.

The ratio of branching fractions between $B^{0} \rightarrow J/\psi \pi^{0}$ and $B^{+} \rightarrow J/\psi K^{*+}$ decays is measured with proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$. The measured value is $\frac{\mathcal{B}_{B^{0} \rightarrow J/\psi \pi^{0}}}{\mathcal{B}_{B^{+} \rightarrow J/\psi K^{*+}}} = (1.153 \pm 0.053 \pm 0.048 ) \times 10^{-2}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The branching fraction for $B^{0} \rightarrow J/\psi \pi^{0}$ decays is determined using the branching fraction of the normalisation channel, resulting in $\mathcal{B}_{B^{0} \rightarrow J/\psi \pi^{0}} = (1.670 \pm 0.077 \pm 0.069 \pm 0.095) \times 10^{-5}$, where the last uncertainty corresponds to that of the external input. This result is consistent with the current world average value and competitive with the most precise single measurement to date.

We present details on a new measurement of the muon magnetic anomaly, $a_\mu = (g_\mu -2)/2$. The result is based on positive muon data taken at Fermilab's Muon Campus during the 2019 and 2020 accelerator runs. The measurement uses $3.1$ GeV$/c$ polarized muons stored in a $7.1$-m-radius storage ring with a $1.45$ T uniform magnetic field. The value of $ a_{\mu}$ is determined from the measured difference between the muon spin precession frequency and its cyclotron frequency. This difference is normalized to the strength of the magnetic field, measured using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The ratio is then corrected for small contributions from beam motion, beam dispersion, and transient magnetic fields. We measure $a_\mu = 116 592 057 (25) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.21 ppm). This is the world's most precise measurement of this quantity and represents a factor of $2.2$ improvement over our previous result based on the 2018 dataset. In combination, the two datasets yield $a_\mu(\text{FNAL}) = 116 592 055 (24) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.20 ppm). Combining this with the measurements from Brookhaven National Laboratory for both positive and negative muons, the new world average is $a_\mu$(exp) $ = 116 592 059 (22) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.19 ppm).

Title: Long-Distance Signal Propagation in AC-LGADCasey Bishop, Ayan Das, Jane Ding, Matthew Gignac, Forest Martinez-McKinney, Simone M. Mazza, Adam Molnar, Noah Nagel, Mohammad Nizam, Jennifer Ott, Hartmut F.-W. Sadrozinski, Bruce Schumm, Abraham Seiden, Taylor Shin, Andrew Summerell, Max Wilder, Yuzhan ZhaoComments: 9 pages, 7 figures, 13th Hiroshima Symposium HSTD13Subjects: High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex); Instrumentation and Detectors (physics.ins-det)
We investigate the signal propagation in AC-LGAD (aka RSD), which are LGAD with a common N+ layer and segmented AC-coupled readout contacts, by measuring response to IR laser TCT on a large selection of AC-LGAD with strip readout. The interest for this topic derives from the realization that while large charge sharing between neighboring strips is essential for good position resolution, large sharing beyond the next neighbor generates background signals which in general are detrimental to the sensor goal of low occupancy. Using AC-LGAD with strip readout produced by Hamamatsu Photonics (HPK), we evaluate the effects of a variety of sensor properties, including geometrical parameters (strip length, width), process parameters like the N+ layer resistivity, the coupling capacitance, and the thickness of the bulk on the signal sharing and the position resolution.

Decays of $\Xi_b^-$ and $\Omega_b^-$ baryons to $\Lambda_c^+ h^- h^{\prime -}$ final states, with $h^- h^{\prime -}$ being $\pi^-\pi^-$, $K^-\pi^-$ and $K^-K^-$ meson pairs, are searched for using data collected with the LHCb detector. The data sample studied corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $8.7\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions collected at centre-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s} = 7$, $8$ and $13\,\mathrm{Te\kern -0.1em V}$. The products of the relative branching fractions and fragmentation fractions for each signal mode, relative to the $B^- \to \Lambda_c^+ \overline{p} \pi^-$ mode, are measured, with $\Xi_{b}^- \to\Lambda_{c}^+ K^- \pi^-$, $\Xi_{b}^- \to\Lambda_{c}^+ K^- K^-$ and $\Omega_{b}^- \to\Lambda_{c}^+ K^- K^-$ decays being observed at over $5\,\sigma$ significance. The $\Xi_{b}^- \to\Lambda_{c}^+ K^- \pi^-$ mode is also used to measure the $\Xi_{b}^-$ production asymmetry, which is found to be consistent with zero. In addition, the $B^- \to \Lambda_{c}^+ \overline{p} K^-$ decay is observed for the first time, and its branching fraction is measured relative to that of the $B^- \to \Lambda_{c}^+ \overline{p} \pi^-$ mode.

Title: First measurement of the $|t|$-dependence of incoherent J/$\psi$ photonuclear productionComments: 19 pages, 2 captioned figures, 2 tables, authors from page 13, published version, figures at this http URLJournal-ref: Phys. Rev. Lett. 132 (2024) 162302Subjects: Nuclear Experiment (nucl-ex); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex)
The first measurement of the cross section for incoherent photonuclear production of J/$\psi$ vector mesons as a function of the Mandelstam $|t|$ variable is presented. The measurement was carried out with the ALICE detector at midrapidity, $|y|<0.8$, using ultra-peripheral collisions of Pb nuclei at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV. This rapidity interval corresponds to a Bjorken-$x$ range $(0.3-1.4)\times 10^{-3}$. Cross sections are given in five $|t|$ intervals in the range $0.04<|t|<1$ GeV$^2$ and compared to the predictions by different models. Models that ignore quantum fluctuations of the gluon density in the colliding hadron predict a $|t|$-dependence of the cross section much steeper than in data. The inclusion of such fluctuations in the same models provides a better description of the data.

Title: Improving NLO QCD event generators with high-energy EW correctionsComments: 45 pages, 10 figures. This version matches the published oneSubjects: High Energy Physics - Phenomenology (hep-ph); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex)
In this work we present a new approach for the combination of electroweak (EW) corrections at high energies, the so-called EW Sudakov logarithms (EWSL), and next-to-leading-order QCD predictions matched to parton-shower simulations (NLO+PS). Our approach is based on a reweighting procedure of NLO+PS events. In particular, both events with and without an extra hard emission from matrix elements are consistently reweighted via the inclusion of the corresponding EWSL contribution. We describe the technical details and the implementation in the MadGraph5_aMC@NLO framework. Via a completely automated procedure, events at this new level of accuracy can be obtained for a vast class of hadroproduction processes. As a byproduct we provide results for phenomenologically relevant physical distributions from top-quark pair and Higgs boson associated production ($t\overline{t}H$) and from the associated production of three $Z$ gauge bosons ($ZZZ$).

Title: New Directions for ALP Searches Combining Nuclear Reactors and HaloscopesComments: 7 pages, 4 figuresJournal-ref: Phys. Rev. Lett. 132, 211802 (2024)Subjects: High Energy Physics - Phenomenology (hep-ph); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex)
In this work we propose reactoscope, a novel experimental setup for axion-like particle (ALP) searches. Nuclear reactors produce a copious number of photons, a fraction of which could convert into ALPs via Primakoff process in the reactor core. The generated flux of ALPs leaves the nuclear power plant and its passage through a region with a strong magnetic field results in the efficient conversion to photons which can be detected. Such magnetic field is the key component of axion haloscope experiments. Adjacent nuclear reactor and axion haloscope experiment exist in Grenoble, France. There, the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) research reactor is situated only $\sim 700$ m from GrAHal, the axion haloscope platform designed to offer several volume and magnetic field (up to 43 T) configurations. We derive sensitivity projections for photophilic ALP searches with ILL and GrAHal, and also scrutinize analogous realizations, such as the one comprising of CAST experiment at CERN and Bugey nuclear power plant. The results that we obtain complement and extend the reach of existing laboratory experiments, e.g. light-shining-through-walls. While the derived sensitivities are not competitive when compared to the astrophysical limits, our analysis is free from the assumptions associated to those.

Title: Detecting Boosted Dark Photons with Gaseous DetectorsComments: 10 pagesSubjects: High Energy Physics - Phenomenology (hep-ph); Astrophysics of Galaxies (astro-ph.GA); High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena (astro-ph.HE); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex); High Energy Physics - Theory (hep-th)
We search for indirect signals of $\mathscr{O}$(keV) dark matter annihilating or decaying into $\mathscr{O}$(eV) dark photons. These dark photons will be highly boosted and have decay lengths larger than the Milky Way, and can be absorbed by neutrino or dark matter experiments at a rate dependent on the photon-dark photon kinetic mixing parameter and the optical properties of the experiment. We show that current experiments can not probe new parameter space, but future large-scale gaseous detectors with low backgrounds (i.e. CYGNUS, NEXT, PANDAX-III) may be sensitive to this signal when the annihilation cross section is especially large.

Title: Finite modular axion and radiative moduli stabilizationComments: 10 pages, 2 figures; ver2 matched to published versionJournal-ref: JHEP 04 (2024) 147Subjects: High Energy Physics - Phenomenology (hep-ph); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex); High Energy Physics - Theory (hep-th)
We propose a simple setup which can stabilize a modulus field of the finite modular symmetry by the Coleman-Weinberg potential. Our scenario leads to a large hierarchy suppressing instanton-like corrections $e^{2\pi i\tau}$ and to a light axion identified as $\mathrm{Re} \tau$, where $\tau$ is the modulus field. This stabilization mechanism provides the axion solution to the strong CP problem. The potential has a minimum at a large $\mathrm{Im}\tau$ which suppresses explicit $U(1)_{\mathrm{PQ}}$ violation terms proportional to $e^{-2\pi {\mathrm{Im}\tau}}$, and hence the quality of the axion is ensured by the residual symmetry associated with the $T$-transformation, $\tau \to \tau +1$, around the fixed point $\tau \sim i\infty$.

Title: Characterization and Optimization of a Cryogenic Pure CsI Detector with Remarkable Light Yield and Unprecedented Energy Resolution for CLOVERS ExperimentSubjects: Instrumentation and Detectors (physics.ins-det); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex)
In this study, we conducted a comprehensive characterization and optimization of a cryogenic pure CsI (pCsI) detector. We utilized a \SI{2}{\centi\metre} cubic crystal coupled with a HAMAMATSU R11065 photomultiplier tube (PMT), achieving a remarkable light yield of \SI{35.2}{PE/\keV_{ee}} and an unprecedented energy resolution of \SI{6.9}{\%} at \SI{60}{\keV}. Additionally, we measured the scintillation decay time of pCsI, which proved to be significantly faster than that of CsI(Na) at room temperature. Furthermore, we investigated the impact of temperature, surface treatment, and crystal shape on the light yield. Notably, the light yield peaked at approximately \SI{20}{\K} and remained stable within the range of \SI{70}-\SI{100}{\K}. We observed that the light yield of polished crystals was approximately 1.5 times greater than that of ground crystals, while the crystal shape exhibited minimal influence on the light yield. These results are crucial for the design of the \SI{10}{\kg} pCsI detector for the future CLOVERS (Coherent eLastic neutrinO(V)-nucleus scattERing at China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS)) experiment.

Title: Single electron charge spectra of 8-inch high-collection-efficiency MCP-PMTsSubjects: Instrumentation and Detectors (physics.ins-det); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex)
The atomic layer deposition(ALD) coating lengthens the lifetime of microchannel plates(MCP), which are used as the electron amplifier of the photomultiplier tubes(PMT). In the Jinping Neutrino Experiment, the newly developed 8-inch MCP-PMT achieves high collection efficiency by coating with high secondary emission materials. The resulting single electron response(SER) charge distribution deviates from the Gaussian distribution in large charge this http URL understand the nature of the jumbo-charged SER, we designed a voltage-division experiment to quantify the dependence of the MCP gain on the energy of incident electrons. Combining the relationship with the Furman probabilistic model, we reproduced the SER charge spectra by an additional amplification stage on the input electrode of the first MCP. Our results favor a Gamma-Tweedie mixture to describe the SER charge spectra of the MCP-PMTs.

Title: Constraints on new physics with (anti)neutrino-nucleon scattering dataComments: 10 pages, 2 tables, v2: version published in Physics Letters B, constraints on scalar interaction at quark level correctedJournal-ref: Phys. Lett. B 854, 138718 (2024)Subjects: High Energy Physics - Phenomenology (hep-ph); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex); Nuclear Experiment (nucl-ex); Nuclear Theory (nucl-th)
New physics contributions to the (anti)neutrino-nucleon elastic scattering process can be constrained by precision measurements, with controlled Standard Model uncertainties. In a large class of new physics models, interactions involving charged leptons of different flavor can be related, and the large muon flavor component of accelerator neutrino beams can mitigate the lepton mass suppression that occurs in other low-energy measurements. We employ the recent high-statistics measurement of the cross section for $\bar{\nu}_\mu p \to \mu^+ n$ scattering on the hydrogen atom by MINERvA to place new confidence intervals on tensor and scalar neutrino-nucleon interactions: $\mathfrak{Re} C_T = -1^{+14}_{-13} \times 10^{-4}$, $|\mathfrak{Im} C_T| \le 1.3 \times 10^{-3}$, and $|\mathfrak{Im} C_S| = 45^{+13}_{-19} \times 10^{-3}$. These results represent a reduction in uncertainty by a factor of $2.1$, $3.1$, and $1.2$, respectively, compared to existing constraints from precision beta decay.

Nowadays, there has been a growing trend in the fields of high-energy physics (HEP) in its both parts experimental and phenomenological studies, to incorporate machine learning (ML) and its specialized branch, deep learning (DL). This review paper provides a thorough illustration of these applications using different DL approaches. The first part of the paper examines the basics of various particle physics types and sets up guidelines for assessing particle physics alongside the available learning models. Next, a detailed classification is provided for representing the jet images that are reconstructed in high energy collisions mainly with proton-proton collisions at well defined beam energies, covering various datasets, preprocessing techniques, and feature extraction and selection methods. The presented techniques can be applied to future hadron-hadron colliders (HLC) such as high luminosity LHC (HL-HLC) and future circular collider-hadron-hadron (FCC-hh). Next, the authors explore a number of AI models analysis designed specifically for images in HEP. We additionally undertake a closer look at the classification associated with images in hadron collisions, with an emphasis on Jets. In this review, we look into various state-of-the-art (SOTA) techniques in ML and DL, examining their implications for HEP demands. More precisely, this discussion tackles various applications in extensive detail, such as Jet tagging, Jet tracking, particle classification, and more. The review concludes with an analysis of the current state of HEP, using DL methodologies. It covers the challenges and potential areas for future research that will be illustrated for each application.
