Observational studies indicate that there is a close association between geomagnetic storm and meteorological parameters. Geomagnetic field lines follow closely the isobars of surface pressure (J.W.King, 1975 Aeronautics and Astronautics 13(4), 10 ). A Physical mechanism linking upper atmospheric geomagnetic storm disturbances with tropospheric weather has been proposed by sikka et. al.(1987 Adv. Atmos. Sci. 5(2), 217) where it is postulated that vertical mixing by turbulent eddy fluctuations results in the net transport upward of positive charges originating from lower levels accompanied simultaneously by downward flow of negative charges from higher levels. The present study reports enhancement of high frequency (<15 days period) fluctuations in daily surface pressure during March 1989 in association with major geomagnetic storm (Ap index = 246) on 13 March 1989. Continuous periodogram power spectral analyses was done for daily surface pressure time series data (TOGA) for the month of March for each of the five years 1986 to 1990 for all grid points (2.5o resolution) from 50oN to 50oS. The percentage number (P) of grid points where periodicities up to 15 days contribute up tp 50 % of total variance was computed. The values of mean (M) and % dispersion (D) of Ap index and P are shown in the figure. March 1989 is associated with enhancement of high frequency fluctuations in surface pressure, i.e. periodicities less than 15 days contribute upto 50% to total variance at more than 60% of grid points.
