Title:Handle Atoms with Care
No PDF available, click to view other formatsAbstract:Atoms of a (regular) language $L$ are introduced by Brzozowski et al. as intersections of complemented and uncomplemented quotients of $L$. In a series of papers, they achieved several results on the structure of maximally atomic languages having the most number of atoms possible (in terms of the state complexity of the language in question), such that each atom has the maximal possible state complexity. To achieve these results, they introduced an nfa called the "átomaton" of a language.
In this note we reproduce the results we know of on this topic, without using the notion of átomata, but using automata-theoretic and combinatorial arguments.
