Title:Characterization of dipolar current-based metamaterials showing a single resonance in the terahertz spectrum
View PDFAbstract: In this paper we study both numerically and experimentally the transmission properties of metamaterials of 2-dimensional array of planar metallic elements for which the electromagnetic response in the terahertz region is mediated by the induced dipolar currents. The transmittance is characterized by the presence of a single resonance in the spectral region ranging from 1 to 8 THz that can be easily selected and scaled. The frequency selection is provided by choosing the size of the planar metallic element once its shape has been defined. By exploiting the scalability properties of the Maxwell equations, it is possible to shift the metamaterial resonant frequency maintaining unaltered the transmittance quality factor. Basing on these studies, we have investigated a series of simple and inexpensive frequency selective metamaterials fabricated by using lithographic processes.
