Title:Heat conduction in a quenched disordered solid using dissipative particle dynamics
View PDFAbstract: A Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD) model for heat conduction in a random solid is studied by analytical and simulation methods. The time evolution of a DPD particle is described by a fluctuating heat conduction equation. The transport mechanism is collisional transfer and the heat conductivity is calculated using a mean field theory, leading to an square density dependence of this transport coefficient. Computer simulations show that the heat diffusivity: (i) agrees only with the mean field result in the limit of large densities; (ii) slowly decreases with decreasing density. It is argued that the sub-leading asymptotic correction depends on the square root density; (iii) at lower densities the model has a conductivity threshold, below which heat conduction is absent. The observed threshold is explained in terms of bond percolation on a random proximity network, or equivalently continuum percolation of completely overlapping spheres, and the observed threshold is very close to the percolation threshold for 2-D continuum percolation, given in the literature. Furthermore, the kinetic theory for DPD is extended to the generalized hydrodynamic regime, where the wave number dependent decay rates of the Fourier modes of the energy and temperature fields are calculated.
