Title:In homogeneous glasses stretched exponential relaxation is purely topological
View PDFAbstract: Geometrical models containing adjustable parameters are normally used to describe the ubiquitous occurrence of stretched exponential relaxation, with a dimensionless stretching fraction beta, in electronic and molecular glasses. Here we show that in homogeneous glasses beta is described by magic (not adjusted) simple fractions beta(d*) derived from fractal configuration spaces determined by different rules in the presence (absence) of a forcing electric field. The rules are based on a new central principle for defining glassy states: equal a priori distributions of fractal residual configurational entropy. Our results are supported by many experiments, where our theoretical predictions for beta(d*) typically agree with observed values to ~ 1%. The theory can be inverted and used to test sample homogeneity and quality.
