Title:Lock-in transition of the charge-density waves of quasi-one-dimensional conductors: origin of the first-order transition
View PDFAbstract:We studied the lock-in transition of charge-density waves (CDWs) in quasi-one-dimensional (q1D) conductors by numerical calculations. In contrast to McMillan's pioneering work, no assumptions about the phase profile were made in this work. We applied the simulated annealing and obtained more details than those of the previous work. We compared our results with the previous numerical and analytical results and found that in the lock-in transition of q1D conductors, CDWs may not lock into the pristine lattice, and be trapped with one of the energy minima. Our findings are consistent with the experimental results in the lock-in transition of quasi-one-dimensional conductors, such as K$_{0.3}$MoO$_3$ and $o$-TaS$_3$. This is understood as chaotic behavior in the neighborhood of the critical point in a discrete system. The origin of the first-order transition is exhibited.
