Title:Gibbsian Statistical Ensemble Theory as an Emergent Limit Law in Probability
View PDFAbstract:Envision a small subsystem $\mathfrak{S}$ exchanging energy $E_1$ with its large stationary environment whose energy $E_2$ has an infinitesimal variation $\delta$. The theory of probability predicts that, as $E_1\to 0$ and fixed $\delta>0$, the conditional probability density for $E_1$ given $E_1+E_2=h$ has a limit law $f_{E_1|E_1+E_2}(x;h) = Z^{-1}(h)\Omega(x)e^{-\beta(h)x}$, where $\beta(y) = \mathrm{d} \ln f_{E_2}(y)/ \mathrm{d} y$. The canonical distribution for the phase space of $\mathfrak{S}$ then can be deduced; a discrete version of the theorem yields the grand canonical distribution and logically resolves Gibbs paradox. An equivalence hypothesis between the conditional probability and conservation laws in dynamics is discussed. In the thermodynamic limit the form of the conditional probability yields the Legendre transformation $F\equiv-\beta^{-1}\ln Z =E-\beta^{-1}S$ where $S=\ln\Omega(E)$ and $\beta=\mathrm{d} S/\mathrm{d} E$.
