Title:About the Cauchy problem in Stelle's quadratic gravity
View PDFAbstract:The present work is focused on the Cauchy problem for the Stelle quadratic gravity models \cite{stelle}-\cite{stelle2}, which are renormalizable higher order derivative models of gravity, but at cost of the presence of ghostly states propagating in the phase space. There exist a previous work about the subject \cite{noakes}. The techniques employed here differ slightly from those in that reference, but the main conclusions agree \cite{noakes}. Furthermore, the analysis of the initial value formulation in \cite{noakes} is enlarged and the use of harmonic coordinates is clarified. In particular, it is shown that there is a redundant constraint between the ones found in \cite{noakes}. In other words, this constraint is satisfied when the equations of motion are taken into account. Furthermore, some terms that are not specified in \cite{noakes} are derived explicitly. This procedure allows the use of some theorems from the mathematical literature, in particular the ones given in \cite{ringstrom}, in order to show the existence of $C^\infty$ solutions of the model and the existence of a maximal global hyperbolic development. The obtained equations may be relevant for a stability analysis of the solutions under small perturbations of the initial data.
