Title:Discovery of Two-Dimensional Multiferroicity in van der Waals CuCrP2S6 Layers
View PDFAbstract:Three dimensional multiferroic materials provide an effective platform for the next generation of magnetoelectric devices, such as nonvolatile memories. With the development of the nanotechnology, the magnetoelectric device with a few nanometer size is highly demanded. Scaling with three-dimensional materials suffers from the dangling bonds and quantum tunneling. Recently, two-dimensional (2D) multiferroic materials arise as a promising candidate. Although two-dimensional ferromagnetic materials and ferroelectric materials have been discovered separately, two-dimensional multiferroic material is still missing. Here, we experimentally show the ferroelectric and ferromagnetic polarization in two-dimensional CuCrP2S6. The out of plane electric polarization can be realized at room temperature and sustain for a long time. Due to the spin-orbital coupling, magneto-electric coupling effect is observed in the in-plane magnetization. Moreover, our first-principles calculations found polarized valley degree of freedom in ferroelectric phase, which can further be switched on and off by an external electric field. The discovery of the super-multiferroicity, where the spins, electric dipoles and valleys are coupled with each other
