Title:Stochastic Closure Equations for the Richardson Cascade
View PDFAbstract:For its closure as a stochastic dynamical system, we recast the Richardson scale cascade in terms of Kelvin's circulation theorem and introduce two types of noise: an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) process representing stochastic sweeping of an intermediate-scale whorl by the larger whorls, and a cylindrical Stratonovich noise process representing its stochastic Lie transport by the smaller whorls. In this approach, the form of the Kelvin theorem is preserved, although both the integrand and the loop velocity in Kelvin's circulation theorem independently acquire additional stochastic velocities of two different types. Namely, (i) The velocity in the integrand acquires non-inertial stochastic sweeping by the large scales; and (ii) the velocity of the material loop acquires stochastic Lie transport by the small scales. We rederive the same model by using the Hamilton--Pontryagin variational principle. The variational derivation has the advantage of putting the model into the framework of geometric mechanics, which makes the approach generally applicable in fluid dynamics. In particular, the Lie--Poisson Hamiltonian structure of ideal fluid mechanics is preserved by the introduction of either, or both types of stochasticity treated here. Several examples are given.
