Title:The inflow rate, a time-symmetric observable obeying fluctuation relations
View PDFAbstract:While entropy changes are the usual subject of fluctuation theorems, we go off the main stream and seek fluctuation relations involving time-symmetric quantities, namely observables that do not change sign if the trajectories are observed backward in time. We find integral fluctuation relations for the (time integrated) difference between entrance rate and escape rate in mesoscopic jump systems. Such inflow rate is a time-symmetric indicator of the system's tendency to change a properly defined local Boltzmann entropy. There is a similar result in the continuum limit leading to overdamped diffusions, where the central object is the divergence of forces. We discuss an analogy between these quantities and the contraction rate in deterministic dynamical systems.
