Title:Failure of isotropic continuous-time random walks to model finite-size particle diffusion in porous media and a redeeming modification
View PDFAbstract:We test the fidelity of modelling diffusion processes of finite size particles in porous media, simulated numerically, by continuous time random walk (CTRW) of the same step size and waiting time distributions, $P_l$ and $P_t$, respectively. The waiting times depend strongly on the interplay between the sizes of the particle and the 'throats' connecting nearest pores. As particles increase in size the diffusion undergoes a transition from normal to anomalous. In contrast to common wisdom, we find that, based only on $P_l$ and $P_t$, CTRW does not predict correctly this transition. We show that the discrepancy is due to the change in effective connectivity (topology) of the porous media with increasing particle size. We propose a method to remedy the CTRW model by adding anisotropy. This adjustment yields good agreement with the simulated diffusion process, making it possible to use the CTRW, with all its advantages, to model diffusion in confined geometries.
