Title:Efficiency fluctuations in quantum thermoelectric devices
View PDFAbstract:We study the performance of thermoelectric junctions at nanoscale, which due to their small size, display significant stochasticity and quantum effects. Within the nonequilibrium Green function (NEGF) technique, we derive the full counting statistics (FCS) for heat and work, and utilize it to calculate the efficiency fluctuations, which we argue, more accurately characterize the thermoelectric junction's performance than the figure of merit. We compare our predictions for efficiency fluctuations to the previously used quantum master equation (QME) approach on a variety of simple models, and show that the latter can fail qualitatively for realistic junction parameters. We propose a Gaussian method to estimate efficiency fluctuations in terms of nonequilibrium currents and noises which are experimentally measurable in molecular junctions. We show that for realistic junction parameters this method leads to much better estimates of efficiency fluctuations than the linear response approximation.
