Title:The Möbius function of the small Ree groups
View PDFAbstract:The Möbius function for a group, $G$, was introduced in 1936 by Hall and can be used to count, amongst other things, the number of inequivalent generating sets of size $n$. If $G$ is simple, then this is also the largest $d$ such that $G^d$ can be $n$-generated. Here we determine the Möbius function for the simple small Ree groups $R(3^{2m+1}) \cong {}^2G_2(3^{2m+1})$ where $m>0$.
