Title:Miniaturized Circular-Waveguide Probe Antennas Using Metamaterial Liners
View PDFAbstract:This paper investigates the radiation performance of miniaturized open-ended circular-waveguide probe antennas whose interior surface is coated with a thin metamaterial liner possessing dispersive, negative, and near-zero permittivity. A field analysis and full-wave simulations show that an HE$_{11}$ mode is introduced well below the fundamental cutoff frequency of an unlined circular-waveguide probe. This mode provides dramatic gain improvements over a similarly sized waveguide probe, enabling its miniaturization. Using practical feeding arrangements, strategies to avoid the propagation of higher-order modes are investigated. A potential thin-wire implementation is proposed, and an anisotropic effective-medium model described by a uniaxial permittivity tensor is shown to have dispersion and radiation characteristics similar to those of the isotropic case.
