Title:Ultrafast X-rays determine the optically induced lattice distortions that transiently enhance superconducting transport in YBa2Cu3O6.5
View PDFAbstract:Mid infrared optical pulses can dynamically distort the crystal lattice of complex solids, melting electronic orders, inducing metallicity and even superconductivity. Selective lattice excitation in YBa2Cu3O6+x has been shown to enhance superconductivity below the superconducting transition temperature Tc, as seen by THz probe spectroscopy. Strikingly, the same type of vibrational excitation also creates a state far above Tc with important similarities to the equilibrium low- temperature superconducting state. In YBa2Cu3O6.5, this effect has been shown to result from redistribution of the tunnelling strength from the intra-bilayer to the inter-bilayer region of the unit cell. Here, we combine ultrafast x-ray diffraction and ab-initio density functional calculations to determine the lattice distortions that trigger such redistribution of interlayer tunnelling. A staggered dilation/contraction of the Cu-O2 intra/inter bilayer distances is observed, possibly explaining the reduction/increase in interlayer tunnelling. Furthermore, anisotropic changes in the buckling of the in-plane Cu-O bonds are found, which may perturb the charge density wave order that is believed to compete with superconductivity. More generally, this work shows a new path to materials discovery, quantitatively reconstructing an optical induced unstable crystal structure with unexpected functionalities. Experiments of this kind may provide new inspiration for materials design.
