Title:Photoluminescence Tuning in Single-layer MoS2 via Oxygen Plasma Treatment
View PDFAbstract:We demonstrate that the photoluminescence (PL) of single-layer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) can be significantly tuned by controlled exposure to oxygen plasma. With the variation of the plasma exposure time, the PL changes from a very high intensity to complete quenching accompanied by clear changes in Raman spectra where gradual reduction of MoS2 peaks were observed along with the appearance of new MoO3 peaks. Using band structure calculations, we show that the creation of MoO3 disordered domains upon exposure to oxygen plasma leads to a direct to indirect bandgap transition in single-layer MoS2 resulting in PL quenching.
