Title:Bounding Helly numbers via Betti numbers
View PDFAbstract:We prove the following Helly-type theorem. For any non-negative integers $b$ and $d$ there exists an integer $h(b,d)$ such that the following holds. If $F$ is a finite family of subsets of $R^d$ such that $i$th reduced Betti number of the interesection of $G$ is bounded by $b$ for every proper subfamily $G$ of $F$ and every $i$ between 0 and $\lceil d/2 \rceil - 1$, then $F$ has Helly number at most $h(b,d)$. The main strength of this result is that very weak assumptions on $F$ are sufficient to guarantee a bounded Helly number.
We obtain this result by combining homological non-embeddability results with a Ramsey-based approach to build, given an arbitrary simplicial complex $K$, well-behaved chain map simplicial chains of $K$ to singular chains to $R^d$. Both techniques are of independent interest.
