Title:Users' Attitudes, Perception, and Concerns in the Era of Whole Genome Sequencing
View PDFAbstract:Advances in Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) will soon allow a large number of individuals to have access to their fully sequenced genome. This is considered by many experts as a historical breakthrough enabling important medical and societal progress. At the same time, however, this risks to amplify a number of ethical and privacy concerns, stemming from the unprecedented sensitivity of genomic information. This paper begins to assess users' perception of privacy and ethical issues with WGS, their attitude toward different WGS programs and genetic tests, and their overall concerns. We report on a series of semi-structured interviews, involving 16 participants, and analyze the results both quantitatively and qualitatively. Our preliminary studies yield some interesting results, as users exhibit common fear of discrimination and demand to retain strict control over their genetic information. Following our initial findings, we highlight the need for more ethnographic studies in the field.
