Title:Foundation of Fractional Langevin Equation: Harmonization of a Many Body Problem
View PDFAbstract: We consider Brownian particles in one dimension interacting via a two-body potential where mutual passage is excluded. Using a new technique we call {\it harmonization}, this many-body problem is mapped on to an effective harmonic chain model. When an external force acts on a tracer particle, we show that the fractional Langevin equation with exponent 1/2, used recently to phenomenologically model single-molecule experiments, describes the particle's dynamics. Our method elegantly recovers previous results, explains Mittag-Leffler relaxation observed experimentally, and predicts new inter-particle distance dynamics of power law type.
