Title:Linear response theory of activated surface diffusion with interacting adsorbates
View PDFAbstract: Activated surface diffusion with interacting adsorbates is analyzed within the Linear Response framework. The interacting single adsorbate approximation previously used is justified from a two bath model where the first harmonic bath takes into account the interaction with the surface phonons and the second harmonic one describes the surface coverage leading to a collisional friction. The corresponding theory is applied to simple systems such as diffusion on flat surfaces and frustrated translational motion in an harmonic potential. Classical and quantum close formulas are obtained. Finally, a more realistic problem like the diffusion of Na atoms on the corrugated surface Cu(001) is presented and discussed in the classical context as well as in the framework of Kramer's theory. Quantum corrections to the classical results are also analyzed.
