Title:Parallel quantised charge pumping
View PDFAbstract: Manipulation of single electrons has become a cornerstone of mesoscopic semiconductor physics, giving rise to a plethora of recent publications. High-frequency, high-accuracy transport of individual charges has been demonstrated in a GaAs/AlGaAs electron pump. Here we realise two single-electron pumps operating in parallel in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The addition of the currents generated by each pump leads to an overall current that exhibits an accuracy far greater than the equivalent current generated by just one pump operated at a higher frequency. The scheme for parallelisation presented in this work is shown to overcome several design and technical issues and allows for the generation of arbitrarily high quantised currents. There are a wide range of applications, including single charge and spin based electron manipulation for quantum information processing, the generation of single photons in pairs and bunches, neural networking and the development of a quantum standard for electrical current. All these applications will benefit greatly from the increase in output current without the characteristic decrease in accuracy as a result of high-frequency operation.
