Title:Synchronization of extended systems from internal coherence
View PDFAbstract: A condition for the synchronizability of a pair of PDE systems, coupled through a finite set of variables, appears to be the existence of internal synchronization or internal coherence in each system separately. For forced-dissipative non-Hamiltonian systems, the coherence commonly arises because of the slaving of small-scale components on an approximate inertial manifold. For a Hamiltonian system, such slaving is precluded by Liouville's Theorem, but a weak form of synchronization is still possible, as illustrated by the relativistic scalar field equation in an expanding universe with a nonlinear potential, that has been shown numerically to admit coherent "oscillon" solutions. Synchronization is manifest as positional coinicidence of the coherent structures in the two systems, a weaker form than "measure synchronization", and no synchronization occurs with a variant of the system that does not exhibit oscillons.
