Title:Spectral Effects of Strong Chi-2 Non-Linearity and Implementation on Bell Measurement and Quantum Gate
View PDFAbstract: Optical $\chi^{(2)}$ non-linearity can be used for parametric amplification and producing down-converted entangled photon pairs that have broad applications. Since non-linear medium exhibits dispersion and gives a frequency response, it is therefore of interest to know how spectral effects of a $\chi^{(2)}$ crystal affects the conversion rate. Here we model the spectral effects of the dispersion of a $\chi^{(2)}$ crystal. Moreover, we illustrate how to utilize a $\chi^{(2)}$ crystal to perform a Bell measurement, and further examine how the spectral effects influence the performance of a quantum gate that employs such a Bell measurement. Here we show a rather surprising result that since the interaction Hamiltonian of a $\chi^{(2)}$ crystal does not commute at different times, the conversion rate of a bulk crystal can be lower than the rate of the same crystal but being cut into many thin slices and separated apart or have spacers in between the slices. This difference emerges because the unitary operator has a Dyson series expansion for the former, which results in spectrally mixed states, whereas the operator has a Taylor series expansion for the latter two cases, in which spectrally separable states can be obtained.
