Title:Magnetism, FeS colloids, and Origins of Life
View PDFAbstract: The alkaline seepage site hydrothermal mound scenario of Russell et al (where framboids are suggested to have nucleated FeS membranes due to their observed presence in chimneys), is expanded to include \textit{rock-magnetism} for 1) enabling self-assembly of colloidal super-paramagnetic greigite clusters (resembling non-ideal ferrofluids) via thermomagnetic-convection; 2) accessing long range aperiodic order via optimized 3D packing of soft clusters in dissipative assemblies, aided by magnetic dipolar forces; 3) thermal gradient driven propulsion of tiny clusters through layers of magnetic cluster assemblies, where ratchet-effects lead to a predecessor scenario of molecular motors, pre-RNA world, optical polarity, etc. ; 4) quantum coherence from alignment of magnetic dipoles, ~ 0 K effective temperature, plus watchdog effect of waiting template partner; and other 'magnetic' possibilities - primordial multicellularity to adaptive learning in nested structures - uncovering a new role for magnetism in the origins of life.

arXivLabs: experimental projects with community collaborators
arXivLabs is a framework that allows collaborators to develop and share new arXiv features directly on our website.
Both individuals and organizations that work with arXivLabs have embraced and accepted our values of openness, community, excellence, and user data privacy. arXiv is committed to these values and only works with partners that adhere to them.
