Title:Coherent control of slow surface polaritons
View PDFAbstract: We propose coherent control of surface polariton fields, which are confined to the vicinity of an interface between two media. Control is achieved by positioning a medium of three-level atoms in close proximity to this interface, thereby enabling electromagnetically-induced transparency. Our theory is quite general, allowing for dielectric, metal, and metamaterial interfaces, and we show, as one important application, that our scheme could dramatically slow the group velocity of surface polaritons to $\sim$500m/s for $\mu$m wavelengths.
