Title:Atom-Pair Tunneling in Optical Lattices Beyond the Bose-Hubbard Model
View PDFAbstract: We demonstrate that the Bose-Hubbard model of ultracold spinless atoms in strongly interacting regime should be extended to include the two-body interaction of nearest neighbors.. An atom-pair tunneling term appeared naturally in the extended model, which leads to essentially no effect in the weak interaction limit, plays a crucial role in the strong atom-atom interaction regime. The tunneling dynamics of two-atom occupation in a double-well trap is studied in terms of both the Bose-Hubbard and extended Hamiltonians showing significant difference and the later results in a good agreement with the experimental observation of atom-pair tunneling.
