Title:Number-conserving phase-space dynamics of the Bose-Hubbard dimer beyond the mean-field approximation
View PDFAbstract: The number-conserving quantum phase space description of the Bose Hubbard model is discussed for the illustrative case of two modes and its generalization to an open quantum system. We derive exact evolution equations for the Husimi-(Q) and the Glauber-Sudarshan-(P)-distribution function based on the SU(2) coherent states instead of the usual U(1)-symmetry breaking Glauber states. This description enables us to go even beyond the mean-field limit, since a Liouvillian flow emerges quite naturally in the limit of large particle numbers. Moreover, the deviations from the exact dynamics can be easily estimated. Within the presented approach it is not only possible to take into account arbitrary initial states but also to calculate many quantities, as e.g. variances etc., which are not accessible within the usual mean-field limit. For instance this method resolves the well-known breakdown of the mean-field approximation. A comparison to methods ignoring the fixed particle number shows that in this case artificial number fluctuations lead to ambiguities and large deviations even for quite simple examples. As one possible application of the methods presented here we analyse the time evolution of the coherence between two condensate modes subject to heating caused by collisions with the background gas.
